'The Death Penalty is not a deterent, it is murder'

Many countries in the world have done away with capital punishment. Some countries like Britain and certain states in The United States of America have only recently abolished the Death Penalty.

Many still view the Death Penalty as a punishment used by people long ago and by the less civilised communities in the world. Many feel that with the arrival of the 21st century, many begin to call for a greater sense of 'civil' and 'modern' behaviour. Such a revolution involves doing away with capital punishment.

The Death Penalty used to be metted out rather freely before the twentieth century. People were executed for sometimes minor offences like stealing. People were executed by stoning, cruxification, hanging, beheading and burning. Such methods of execution ensured the criminal experienced immense pain before he or she actually died.

Modern metods of execution such as hanging, lethal injection, the electric chair and gas chamber ensures that the criminal dies more quicly and feels less pain. However, the death penalty is still a form in which life is taken away. People are sentenced to death for crimes they may have committed.

The death penalty is therefore a form of legalised murder. No matter what the reason, the Death Penalty is still a form of murder rather than a deterent as a life is ended in the process of upholding justice.

Censorship can be a very important and useful but at the same time, problematic and a cause of much discontent and opposition.

Many in countries like Singapore are against all forms of censorship. Many say that censorship deprives them of accurate and unbiased news and accounts of occurrences. This is because, ruling parties can always prevent the people from knowing certain details by using censorship of the media. Freedom of the press will give people a broader understanding of both local and foreign events.

However, a certain degree of censorship is important. Many songs, movies, magazines and articles from the West come into Singapore every year. Many of these contain content that may be considered socially inappropriate for the viewing of young Singaporeans.

Some of the articles from the West may directly or indirectly encourage negative behavior such as pre-marital teen sex and watching movies with pornographic content. To prevent young Singaporeans from being exposed to such things censorship is very important

Hence, censorship can be an important tool in shaping the society in Singapore.
